We have been on a homemade play dough kick lately! I have tried quite a few recipes and here's my favorite:
Homemade Play Dough Recipe
8 cups of flour
1/2 cup Vegetable oil
2 cups of salt
1/3 cup cream of tartar
+ 7.5 cups of boiling water
-This is the BEST and easiest no bake play dough recipe! All you have to do is mix all of the ingredients together in a kitchen aid and then slowly add the 7.5 cups of boiling water. Use the dough hook and slowly increase the speed as you use a spatula to scrape the ingredients from the sides of the bowl towards the middle of the dough hook. Once is is all mixed together well, let it run on medium/high speed for a few minutes, this will make it super soft! Scoop it out of the bowl and knead it with your hands until its the perfect consistency and store for up to 6 months in zip lock bags! If you don't have a kitchen aid, you can do this in a big bowl with wooden spoon or spatula and just mix by hand. It is a big exhausting, but it does the trick! If you plan to color your dough, add food coloring to the boiling water before you pour it into the bowl! This way, the color distributes more evenly!
If you want to add a scent to your play dough, you can do it one of two ways!
1) Add extract to the water before pouring into the dry ingredients. We have used peppermint, almond, coconut, lemon and strawberry extract. Coconut has to be my favorite! YUM, it smells like the beach!
2) Add essential oils to the dry ingredients. We do about 10-15 drops! you can always add more if its not scented enough, just make sure to add it while its in the kitchen aid mixing so it distributes evenly.
Here is an essential oil set thats only $12! I usually use these in my play dough instead of our more expensive Young Living oils because... welp, its just play dough! haha!
We did Lavender Oil in our purple dough... uhhhmazing! This stuff smells like heaven!! I like to let the kids play with this one before bedtime! We used Eucalyptus Oil in our blue dough, Lemon in our natural colored dough, and Sweet Orange in the orange dough!
Add a cup of cocoa powder to the dry ingredients! Thats it- nothing more and nothing less! this chocolate play dough smells so good you will want to eat it. Trust me, don't.
Add about 1/4 cup of ground cinnamon to the dry ingredients. Once again, thats it and my oh my does it smell fabulous!
